Double page spread

When creating my double page spread I focused on certain things to make my product look like Total Film and make it stand out and attract the readers attention.

The first thing that I had to do was create column guides, this helps keep the text in line and gives the product a neater, clean and more organised look. I decided to have three column guides on the first page so that I could fit the introduction on along with the header and kicker. This also meant that I could add in things to separate the text which will help make my product look more like Total Film's. On the three other pages I decided to use only two column guides as I only needed two to fit all of my content onto the pages. This helped me separate the films from each other.

To create text flow in my magazine I had to make boxes where I wanted the text to go. I then had to place the text into the boxes and drag it into other boxes if the text didn't fit. This meant that the text flowed nicely and gave the magazine an organised, neat look. I used this for all of the text in my magazine so that it looked even. I also had to cut some of my text out in places to make it fit onto the pages. I cut out some text in the introduction and in the Alice In Wonderland review which made sure the text fit onto the page nicely.

I used drop cap in my introduction as this is something that Total Film have in their magazines. To do this I had to highlight the first letter in the introduction and make it bigger than the rest of the text which makes it stand out. By doing this I made my magazine look more like Total Film's. Using a drop cap draws the readers focus to the writing.

I had to resize images so that they would fit on my magazine, this also meant that the images were in proportion. To resize the images I had to go onto Photoshop, select the image layer and press CTRL and (edit, free transform alternatively). While resizing the images I held shift too keep the proportions the same for all of the images.

Total Film use the font Eagle Bold in their magazine so to make my magazine similar to that of Total Film's, I used the same font. To use this font, I first had to download it as it was not already available. To do this I had to go online and find the font and then download it and add it onto the fonts on my computer. This meant that I could use it on both Photoshop and In Design.

In the double page spread I added page furniture which are the things such as Japanese dots and cross hatch lines. These are things that Total Film use in their magazine to fill pages and it gives the pages depth and they wont look empty. Putting these things in my magazine will enable the audience to recognise the project. I used the Japanese dots in the introduction, I put them in between the text and above and below the kicker. This means that the page will not look so empty. I used the cross hatch lines in the middle of the double pages, this helps connect the pages together and it is very similar to Total Film's as this is something they also do. I put these lines underneath some of the pictures as well to fill the pages and give more depth. Using these things have made my product look a lot more like Total Film's.

I have used layers in my magazine which helps give it depth and makes it look a lot more interesting and helps catch the audiences attention. I have used layers with the big numbers in the middle of the pages. I put them over the images and placed the text around so that the numbers stand out which means that the audience will look to them and read the content. I also layered the header as I put the 5 under the rest of the writing which gave the header depth and looked a lot like Total Film's. The layers give page variety and makes the pages look a lot more full. I think the layering was most effective at the number 1 as it drew attention to it and looked neat and organised.

The different column layouts also add page variety as on the first page there are three columns and the rest only have two. This helps separate the pages and gives enough space for all of the content to fit on the pages.

Some of the images have been placed diagonally which makes the product look even and neat while also keeping the pages full. This also creates a sense of energy which is good for a male audience. Two of the images have been placed in a certain way and it looks as though both of the eyes are looking to the middle of the page which creates a focal point and draws the audiences attention to the middle of the page.

The use of headers catch the readers attention and draw their focus to the article. I made the header colourful so it would stand out and make the readers wants to read the article. The article consists of reviews of Johnny Depp films, they are set out with ratings and definitive moments which keeps the magazine looking even. All of the  pages are full which creates more depth and makes the magazine look more interesting which will attract the readers attention.

The font that I used in the magazines content was Times New Roman, I used this because this is the font that Total Film use in their magazine and by using this it enabled the audience to recognise the project. Total Film use three main colours in their magazine which are black, white and red. I used these colours throughout my magazine so that it was familiar to Total Films. These colours are simple but also make the magazine look very nice and neat.

This is my magazine while in progress. I have added the kicker and introduction. I have also put the Japanese dots here which makes it look more full. I have added photos in and cross hatch lines underneath them which is what Total Film do in their magazines. I have put the big numbers in and layered them over the pictures and wrapped the text around them so that it all fits. I made the stroke on the number 1 bigger than the rest so that it stood out more and attracted the attention of the readers. I added a large image of Johnny Depp above which filled space and made the magazine look fuller.

This is my double page spread when finished. I added the header and used the three main colours as it is the biggest thing on the page and will attract the readers attention. I made the number 5 white and added a drop shadow to make sure that it could be seen, I like this as it is subtle. I also added more images which were of the posters of the films. I used these so that it may help people recognise the film that is featured. This also helped fill more space and it fit with the content and made the magazine look organised. I also added the sub heading over the image of Johnny Depp which filled more space and gave the magazine even more depth.

Overall, I think I did well making my magazine and I think it looks very similar to something that would feature in a Total Film magazine. I thought a lot about the way Total Film set out their pages and I also thought about the little things such as Japanese dots which also feature in their magazines and it helped give the magazine more depth and made it look a lot more full and interesting.

Image on front cover

Original image
This is the original image, I have chose to put this on my front cover as a part of the 'Upcoming Films'. It is from the movie Insurgent. This image is suitable to be used on the front cover as it is however I have decided to edit it slightly.

Resolution changeI have changed the resolution so that the quality of the image is good when printed.

Burn tool
I used the burn tool to make a subtle change in the skin tone of the subject. This makes the glass surrounding the subject stand out more which creates a sharper look.

Front cover image
To get the image for the front cover of my magazine I took various different photos using different lighting to create an image that portrayed the feeling that I was hoping to achieve. I chose to use an image where the subjects chin is slightly tilted upwards which connotes that they are powerful and in control.

Original image
This is the image that I am going to be using for the front cover of my magazine. This image is already suitable to be used on the front cover of a magazine however I can edit the image to make it even better. I will be editing this image and changing different things to make it more suitable as a front cover image.

Resolution change
The resolution of an image effects the quality of it when printing. The images resolution should be 300DPI (dots per inch) so that it is good quality when printed. Changing the resolution will not make any difference to the way the image looks on a computer but will make a lot of difference when printing.

The first thing I did to this image was change the resolution. The original resolution of the image was 72DPI (dots per inch) which is very bad quality so I changed it to 300DPI so that it would make the image good quality.

Brightness/Contrast adjustments
The brightness adjustment helps highlight certain parts of the image by making it brighter which helps certain things stand out. It can also make shadows more prominent by decreasing the brightness which will mean that things may not stand out as much. The contrast adjustment changes the overall tonal value in the image.

I  decided to increase the brightness slightly so that my subjects features would stand out more, this also decreased the amount of shadow slightly which helped the subject stand out. I also increased the contrast a tiny bit which brought back some shadow without making it too prominent.

Unsharp mask
The unsharp mask is used to sharpen an image, it can be used to help emphasise the texture and detail of an image.

I used the unsharp mask so that my image would have a more crisp look and so that the texture of the image was more noticeable. It also created a lighter effect on the background of the image.

Clone stamp
The clone stamp is used to get rid of things such as blemishes or any marks on the subject in an image.

I used a different photo that I found on the internet to use the clone stamp on as my model did not have any blemishes that I could have used the tool on.

Dodge and burn tool
The dodge and burn tools are used to lighten and darken certain parts of an image. The dodge tool lightens and the burn tool darkens. This tool should be used carefully as the slightest bit can be too much and can ruin the image.

I used the dodge tool on the background around the edges of the image to make it look smoother. I then used the burn tool very lightly on the subject to darken her skin slightly which helped her stand out more.

Curves
The curves tool affects the tone and contrast of an image. You can adjust the red, green and blue curves which will all give different effects to the image. It has to be a very subtle change as adjusting the curves can just make the image look either red, green or blue.

I adjusted the red and green curves to make an S, I had to change them multiple times so that I got the right effect on the image. I then adjusted the blue curve and also made that an S, however it was the other way round. I think that this created a nice subtle effect, especially on the background. It also lightened the subjects facial features slightly which made them stand out more.

Desaturate
The desaturation tool washes out the colour of an image and converts it to grayscale values. It leaves the image in the same colour mode which means that the effects from the curve tool stay the same and the brightness is not affected however the image is instead grayscale.

I used the desaturate tool as I wanted to see what the image would look like with the colour washed out. I like this effect and think it is good that the brightness of the image doesn't change as the images values have stayed the same but have been converted to grayscale.

Add noise
The noise tool lets you add a noise layer to the photograph and gives a grain type look and can make it look more 'vintage'. Too much noise can ruin a photograph as it will look as though the image has spots of discolouration.

I added a layer of noise to my image to test how it would look and I think it looks good and gives a good effect. I think that the noise layer gives an authentic, vintage effect to the image which looks good.

Layers
The layer tool adds layers onto the image, you can see through the transparent areas of a layer to a layer below. This can help bring out certain parts of the image.
I added a layer to the image but I don't think that it gave a great effect because the image is grayscale which meant that it couldn't make much of a difference. The only thing that happened was the subjects skin getting lighter which I think made it too light.

Magazine front cover
The first thing I did to edit the image for the front cover of my magazine was change the resolution to 300DPI. I used the rulers to insert margin guides in the image which will help when adding text to the image. I adjusted the brightness and contrast and then used the dodge tool to lighten up the models face. I used the burn tool around the edges of the image and then used the curves tool to extenuate certain colours in the image.

This is my front cover after I edited the photo and added in all of the text.
